On Malala's sixteenth birthday, she was invited to speak at United Nations. She goes to New York for this and she talks about her experiences there, such as seeing Annie on Broadway or staying in a fancy hotel. Malala talks about how she is still "just a girl" and "a girl like any other".
Malala talks about her positive attitude towards what has happened to her and I admire her for it. Malala talks about all the journalists who have come to interview her, and some of them have annoyed her. She talks about her further plans for her campaign.
Malala continues to Skype and keep in touch with her friend Moniba. Malala often gets very homesick. It is a long time before Malala can go home.
Malala and her family settle in to their new life in Birmingham. They are lonely and Malala's brothers are upset because they have no one to play with. Malala goes to a new school in Birmingham and there is a uniform. Malala sometimes wishes she was back home in her old classroom, with no computers.
Malala is finally released from the hospital. Malala talks about missing her home. Malala Skyped with a friend from her old home. Malala regains her hearing and is now able to leave.
Doctors operated for 48 hours behind Malala's ear trying to repair a facial nerve that had been damaged, trying to "fix" her face. Malala's eardrum had been shattered. It took four months for Malala to be able to smile or wink. While Malala is in the hospital, she reads the Wizard of Oz, which I have neither read nor watched. In December, Malala was able to go outside again. Malala says she is not going home any time soon.
Malala receives cards from around the world wishing her well in her recovery. A package came from Benazir Bhutto's children, with two of Bhutto's scarves inside. Many celebrities, such as Madonna, Angelina Jolie, Selena Gomez, and Beyonce had sent their regards, too.
Malala's family fills her in on what has happened the past sixteen days she has been in the hospital. She had been taken in a helicopter out of Pakistan, and she went to several hospitals. At one of those hospitals, her brain was swelling and she needed to have a piece of her skull removed in order for it to expand. Malala's brother was the last to be informed as to what happened to Malala. The Taliban claim they are still to kill Malala.
Malala's family is taking longer and longer to reach her, but she can talk again. With Malala not being able to talk, it reminds me a bit of The Little Mermaid. Malala asks her family to bring her her school bag. When Malala and her family finally reunite, it is the first time Malala cries being in the hospital. Malala has trouble moving half of her face, and cannot smile when she is trying to reassure her parents she is okay. Malala is now able to walk again, as she is improving in her health. Malala's mother is concerned about her face, but Malala explains she has come to accept her face.
The Little Mermaid: Malala thinks one of the worst things about being in the hospital is boredom. Malala's eyesight is improving, which is a sign she is recovering completely. She learns she had been put into a coma in a week and she had flown in a private jet. She wonders what else she has missed.
